Major historical events

In 1988 the all-union commercial foreign trade association “Sovcomflot” was re-formed as a joint-stock commercial enterprise – one of the first in modern Russia. The fleet’s total deadweight at the time was 1.6 million tonnes. It did not have a clearly defined specialisation. The enterprise’s founders were Minmorflot of the USSR and the country’s maritime shipping companies - Dalnevostochnoye, Chernomorskoye, Novorossiyskoye, Latviyskoye, Baltiyskoye, and Sovetskoye Dunayskoye. Thanks to an intelligently designed development strategy, Sovcomflot was gradually transformed from an unremarkable shipping company into one of the global leaders in maritime energy transportation.     • Creation of a new SCF brand for the Group
    • First oil shipment made from Russia’s Arctic shelf (Varandey project)
    • OAO Novoship merges with OAO Sovcomflot
    • First Russian LNG shipment (Sakhalin-II project).
    • Start of platform supply vessel operations
  • 2010
    • SCF Baltica (113,000 tonnes) becomes the largest tanker in history to successfully cross the Northern Sea Route
    • First engineering operation to tow oil platform base structure into position at new offshore field (Sakhalin-I project).
    • Seismic exploration vessel Vyacheslav Tikhonov commences operations
    • Opening of SCF Arctic (group of companies) to support broader participation in servicing projects on Russia’s continental shelf
    • Representative office opened in South-East Asia (Singapore)
    • The ship Vladimir Tikhonov (Suezmax class, 163,000 tonnes dwt) becomes largest tanker in history to cross the Northern Sea Route
    • Development strategy for 2011- 2020 approved.
  • 2014
    • The Arctic shuttle tanker Mikhail Ulyanov (deadweight: 70,000 tonnes) undertook the first shipment of crude oil extracted from Russia’s Arctic shelf
    • A joint enterprise specialising in offshore seismic exploration was founded with the French company CGG
    • The port of Sochi was successfully modernised as part of preparations for the 22nd Winter Olympic Games held in the city
    • Sovcomflot celebrated its 25th anniversary
    • The largest tanker in Russia’s commercial fleet was named Svet (size: VLCC, deadweight: 320,000 tonnes)
    • The dual jubilee at the Sakhalin-2 project: the gas tanker Grand Elena made her hundredth voyage from the port of Prigorodnoye in Russia to Japan, and the oil tanker Zaliv Aniva delivered its 400th consignment of oil to the ports of Japan since year-round shipping operations began in 2008
    • The construction of the series of advanced design Atlanticmax-type LNG carriers, Velikiy Novgorod, Pskov, SCF Melampus and SCF Mitre, finished
  • 2016
    • SCF Group has significantly strengthened its positions in the strategic market segments with the purchase of 9 up-to-date ice class tankers from PRISCO and 2 icebreaking supply vessels from Swire Pacific Offshore
    • SCF Group consolidated its subsidiaries responsible for the technical management of the fleet within a new single governance structure under the umbrella brand SCF Management Services
    • The construction of the unique series of the Arctic shuttle tankers Shturman Albanov, Shturman Malygin and Shturman Ovtsyn for the year-round transportation of oil from the Gulf of Ob completed
    • Sovcomflot became the title sponsor of the SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2016
    • Sovcomflot introduced a ‘Green Funnel’ series of pioneering Aframax crude oil tankers that use LNG as a primary fuel. Read more

  • 2019
    • Sovcomflot’s initiative to introduce LNG as a primary fuel for large-capacity tankers has won a wide recognition within the industry. Gagarin Prospect, the lead ship of the ‘Green Funnel’ series, has received several high-profile awards, praised as ‘the Next Generation Ship’ and ‘the Ship of the Year.’ Read more
    • Maritime Arctic Transport company has been jointly established by NOVATEK, Sovcomflot, COSCO Shipping, and the Silk Road Fund to manage a fleet of icebreaking LNG carriers for NOVATEK projects. Read more
