On 3 June 2021, as part of the 24th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia's Minister of Transport, Vitaly Saveliev, paid an official visit to Sovcomflot (SCF Group) head office in St. Petersburg.

During the visit, he met with Sergey Frank, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sovcomflot, and Igor Tonkovidov, President and CEO of Sovcomflot, who gave the Minister a tour of SCF’s head office, including visits to SCF’s Marine Operations, Engineering, and Training Centres.

At SCF’s Engineering Centre, the Minister received a report on the Company’s progress in adopting LNG fuel for large-capacity tankers as part of a Russian Federal programme Increasing the Use of Natural Gas as Transportation Fuel.

At SCF’s Training Centre, Vitaly Saveliev witnessed the specialised training process for fleet personnel working in the Arctic aboard advanced ice class vessels and discussed SCF’s best practices in helping seafarers develop the professional competences required for Arctic operations. This discussion was specifically focused on both regulatory and technical aspects of ensuring the safety of the Arctic navigation, further improving infrastructure along the Northern Sea Route (NSR), substituting foreign shipping services for transporting Russia’s strategic export cargoes, and creating new jobs for Russian seafarers.

During the visit, the Minister officially awarded all the crew members of the Arctic LNG carrier Christophe de Margerie for their part in an experimental round trip transit along the NSR completed in January/February 2021. Together with an earlier experimental transit along the NSR in May 2020, it allowed for an almost twofold extension of the period of navigation in the Eastern sector of the Russian Arctic, marking another step towards opening the year-round navigation along the NSR. It is an exceptionally rare occurrence within the Russian shipping industry for the entire crew of a vessel to receive ministerial recognition.
